Firstly, an important note on gender. For Spanish numbers ending in ‘uno’ (’one’), you use the form ‘un’ to precede masculine nouns, and ‘una’ to precede feminine nouns. Only in counting is the ‘uno’ form used.

The Spanish numbers 16 to 29 are usually written as one word. Formerly they were written as 3 words, for example diez y siete, diez y ocho, diez y nueve, veinte y dos etc. The pronunciation is the same, however, the modern approach of using one word is preferred. Compound Spanish numbers from 31 to 99 are all written as 3 words.

When being used alone (i.e.being 100 exactly) ciento is shortened to cien where it precedes a noun of either gender; the longer form is used within longer numbers (except when preceding mil).

You should note here that in Spanish numbers over 100, the ‘y’ (’and’) is used only between the tens and unit digits. For example 145 is ciento cuarenta y cinco, not ciento y cuarenta y cinco.

In Spanish numbers the word mil is never pluralised, for example, 2000 is dos mil, not dos miles. Additionally, the word mil is never preceded by ‘un’, whereas ‘un’ does precede millón and billón as shown below.
